Cypress is located within the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Houston and located along the U.S. High 290, twenty miles northwest of Houston's city limits. It was mostly rural until the 1980s when developers started several master-planned communities and is now known for having a large amount of residential and commercial development in recent years and one of the Houston area's largest suburban communities.
